We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the 15th International Conference of the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry, which focused on "Innovative Technology for Preventive Oral Care." This event brought together professionals worldwide to share their expertise and insights in preventive dentistry.
The conference attracted 372 registered participants, including 322 pre-registered attendees, 26 invited speakers, and 24 on-site registrations. Our attendees represented 20 countries and regions, hailing from 63 different universities and institutions. The diverse range of speakers and participants truly showcased the global impact of the conference.
The conference's Gala Dinner was a highlight of the event, with over 400 participants in attendance. This gathering provided an excellent opportunity for networking and fostering connections among professionals in preventive dentistry, promoting further collaboration and innovation in the field.
The conference featured 182 abstracts and interactive poster presentations, showcasing cutting-edge research and findings from 13 countries and regions. These presentations encouraged lively discussions and knowledge sharing, further highlighting the international scope of the conference. We presented a number of awards to outstanding presenters, inspiring and motivating young academics to pursue high-quality research in the future.
In conclusion, the 15th International Conference of the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry was a monumental success in promoting innovative technology in preventive oral care and fostering global collaboration in the field. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, speakers, and organising committee members for their invaluable contributions to the conference's success. Prof. Chun-Hung Chu
15th President of the AAPD
Nick Jakubovics is Professor of Oral Microbiology at Newcastle University, UK and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research. He has more than 20 years’ experience in oral microbiology, including a post-doctoral position at the University of Bristol (1998-2004) and a Fellowship at NIDCR, Bethesda, USA (2004-2007). His translational research program aims to find new approaches to control oral biofilms and biofilm-related infections within the body. His interests include the biofilm matrix, novel materials for biofilm control and microbial cell-cell adhesion in biofilms. He has published more than 100 papers and has been named on grant awards totaling >£4.5 million. He has a strong network of international collaborations and became Honorary Professor in Restorative Dental Sciences at Hong Kong University in 2022. Prof Jakubovics was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Applied Microbiology, 2011-2015, and was a Features Editor for the Society’s quarterly magazine from 2014-2020. He was Associate Editor at Oral Diseases (2016-2017) and the Journal of Dental Research (2017-2020) before being appointed Editor-in-Chief of the JDR in 2020. As part of this role, he is member of the Boards of Directors International Association for Dental Research and American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. He also devotes a significant amount of time to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has co-authored major chapters in dental and microbiology textbooks.
Professor Emeritus Lakshman `Sam` Samaranayake is a renowned clinical academic with expertise in clinical microbiology and executive level administration. The author of over 450 scientific communications - cited on 32,000 + occasions (h-index 97), and seminal texts, he has served over 13 years as the Executive Dean of dental schools in Hong Kong, Australia and UAE. He has received numerous accolades for his outstanding contributions to dentistry, including the King James IV Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK, and the Distinguished Scientist Award of IADR, USA. He holds many visiting/adjunct professoriate appointments in the universities of Thailand, Australia, UK, Middle East, and China. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Dental Journal, the flagship journal of the FDI World Dental Federation.
Dr. Melissa is a lecturer in the Department of Dental Public Health and Preventive Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia. She graduated her dental degree from Universitas Indonesia and gained her PhD at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan in 2018 in the field of Oral Health Promotion. She is a Fellow of Indonesian Society of Dental Public Health (FISDPH) and Fellow of Indonesian Society of Preventive Dentistry (FISPD). Her research interest mainly on community oral health, preventive dentistry, oral health and prevention in geriatric population, and oral health for special need population. She is now the newly appointed President of Association of Indonesian Dental Public Health Profession (2023 - 2025), and actively involves in various national and international association.
She is actively involved in the development and implementation of Interprofessional Education and Interprofessional Collaborative Practice at Health Science Cluster Universitas Indonesia. She really believes that health professionals should work collaboratively and dental students should experience various community dental outreach programs to experience serving people and improve their oral health.
Dr Chan practices photonic dentistry for over 39 years. His clinical competency has been recognized by his conferral as a Fellow of RACDS. He has made professional contributions as a Representative on Laser for the Australian Dental Association and Standards Australia. Academically, he was conferred the PhD in Medicine for Photobiomodulation. He reputably won the prestige prize “The Best Scientific Research Award”-2010 WFLD Congress. Currently, he serves as an Honorary Research Fellow, University of Sydney. Eminently, he serves in the Editorial Board for Lasers in Medical Science. He teaches and lectures both nationally and internationally. As the Director for the WFLD-Asian Pacific Division he organizes Laser conferences, developing and teaching curriculum for evidence-based dental laser training. Through these involvements and in recognition of his significant contributions to Laser Dentistry, he was conferred as a Fellow of ICD and was appointed as the Honorary Assistant Professor, The University of Hong Kong.
Prof Chu is a professor and an associate dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong (HKU). He is the President of the Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong, the President of the Asia Academy of Preventive Dentistry, a FDI World Dental Federation Public Health Committee Member, and the Vice President of the Asian-Oceanian Federation of Conservative Dentistry. He has a strong advanced teaching, research and clinical training with a BDS, PDipDS, MDS and PhD from HKU. Prof Chu is a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and received the prestigious AGD Lifelong Learning & Service Recognition Award. Through examination, Prof Chu became a fellow of the Royal Australasians College of Dental Surgeons, a dental fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), and a diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry. Prof Chu was elected as a fellow of the RCSEd Faculty of Dental Trainers for his eminence in teaching, a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials for his excellence in research and a fellow of the International College of Dentists for his dedication in pro bono community services. Prof Chu published approximately 250 journal articles with a Scopus h index of 43. He is a section chief editor of Frontiers in Oral Health and Dentistry Journal, and an editor of JDR Clinical & Translational Research, International Dental Journal and BMC Oral Health. As the principal investigator, Prof Chu received more than US$ 9M grants for research and clinical care.
Dr. Yasmi Crystal is the founder and senior specialist at Comprehensive Pediatric Dentistry, NJ, Clinical Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry and on the medical staff of the Robert Wood Johnson, Rutgers University Hospital. Dr. Crystal has a DDS degree from Universidad Tecnologica de Mexico (UNITEC), a DMD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Pediatric Dental specialty training from Eastman Dental Center, University of Rochester and a MSc in Clinical and Translational Research from CTSI, NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Crystal is a Diplomate and an Examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is very active in AAPD, IAPD and IADR, manuscript reviewer for several major scientific journals, and has participated in the writing of national guidelines to improve the practice of Pediatric Dentistry. She has presented lectures to varied health care audiences across the world and has published numerous research articles in peer reviewed scientific journals on topics of Caries Management, Risk Assessment and Minimal Intervention Approaches including SDF therapy, and the Role of Conscious Sedation for delivery of care in Pediatric Dentistry. As a researcher, educator and with over 30 years’ experience as a private primary care provider, her presentations blend evidence-based recommendations with down to earth approaches for the provision of pediatric dental care in public and private settings.
Dr. Duangthip is a Senior Clinical Practitioner and Undergraduate Program Director of Cariology, Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong. She was conferred Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Science (MSc) in Dental Public Health from the University of Hong Kong, Doctor of Dentistry (Dr. med. dent.) from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. She is a Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (MRACDS) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Thailand (FRCDT) in Dental Public Health. Dr. Duangthip was an invited speaker at several international conferences. She published more than 65 peer-reviewed journals with H-index of 18 and more than 1,200 citations (Scopus). Her research interest focuses on silver diamine fluoride, caries management, and community dental care. Currently, she is an Associate Editor in BMC Oral Health and Assistant Specialty Chief Editor in Frontiers in Oral Health. Last but not least, Dr. Duangthip is a President-elect of the Pediatric Oral Health Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and Vice President of the Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong.
Dr. John Featherstone is Dean Emeritus (the former Dean) of the School of Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Professor Emeritus of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at UCSF. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wellington (New Zealand).
His research over the past 48 years has covered several aspects of cariology (study of tooth decay), he was one of the scientists who established how fluoride really works, and he was a pioneer in research on laser interactions with hard tissues. His work has led to the development and marketing of new lasers that have advanced laser dentistry.
He spearheaded the development of CAMBRA® (caries management by risk assessment) at UCSF and is currently active in encouraging the implementation of CAMBRA in several venues across the world.
He has received numerous National and International awards, including the Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Dental Caries from the International Association for Dental Research (2002); the Zsolnai Prize for outstanding research in dental caries from the European Organization for Caries Research (2002); T.H. Maiman Award: for excellence in dental laser research. Academy of Laser Dentistry, 2002; the Norton Ross Award for excellence in clinical research from the American Dental Association (2007); the Lifetime Achievement Medal from the Alpha Omega International Dental Organization, 2022. He is as an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fouchard Society, an honorary lifetime member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry and also an honorary lifetime member of the American Dental Association.
He has published over 320 papers and book chapters.
Professor Flemmig earned his dental degree at the University of Freiburg and received training in Oral Surgery at the University of Hamburg and in Periodontology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He holds a Dr. med. dent. degree from the University of Freiburg, a Dr. med. dent. habil. degree from the University of Würzburg, and an M.B.A. as well as a certificate in Health Sector Management from Duke University; he is board certified in Periodontology and maintained an intramural practice limited to Periodontology and Implant Dentistry for 25 years. He served as Chairman at the Departments of Periodontology at the Universities of Würzburg and Münster, and the University of Washington where he also held the Schluger Endowed Chair. Professor Flemmig served as Director of the Prince Phillip Dental Hospital in Hong Kong SAR and currently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Head of the Institute for Advanced Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong where he also holds the Kingboard Professorship in Advanced Dentistry. Professor Flemmig’s research focuses on the control of oral biofilms and the economics of oral healthcare.
A/Prof. Hamdi Hosni Hamama is a Clinical Associate Professor in Operative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry Mansoura University, Egypt. He is also the Head of Operative Dentistry division at New-Mansoura University. A/Prof. Hamama is also Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Hong kong and Adjunct Professor at the Saveetha Dental College & Hospitals, India. He was a clinical assistant professior in the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong before he returned to serve in his alum mater. A/Prof. Hamama graduated from Mansoura University with Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Opererative Dentistry & Endodontics. He was conferred Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the field of Aesthetic and Operative Dentistry from The University of Hong Kong. A/Prof. Hamama is a Dental Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FDS RCPS). He was appointed as the International Dental Advisor of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. A/Prof. Hamama published extensively with a Google h index of 17 and i 10-index of 24. He lectured widely in national and international conference. A/Prof. Hamama is the Secretary of IADR-Egyptian Section of the international Association for Dental Research (IADR). He is a reviewer for many international peer review journals and serves as an Associate Editor in Dental section of the Helyion.
A/Prof. Hoang is the Vice Dean in charge and the head at the Department of Dental Public Health at the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He is the President Elect of the International Association for Dental Research Southeast Asian Division. He received D.D.S. from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at HCMC in 1995, finished M.Sc and Ph.D of Odonto-Stomatology in 2003 and 2017 respectively. His major research areas include oral disease epidemiology, preventive dentistry, water fluoridation, behavioral sciences in oral health and oral health promotion and dental education. A/Prof Hoang has become an invited speaker and received awards at many international dental conferences since 2005, including: The Second Prize of Travel Award from IADR-SEA Division in 2003; The “Third Prize” for Oral Presentation at the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting of the South East Asia Association For Dental Education” at SEAADE in 2019; and the “Best paper for Innovations in Dental Education during the COVID-19” at the SEAADE meeting 2021.
Dr. Ji graduated from the University of Hong Kong Summa Cum Laude, and completed his Master in Biomedical Science in University of Maryland in 2017. He has also attained both certificates in Periodontics and Implant Periodontal Prosthodontics. He was awarded Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery by American Academy of Periodontology Foundation in 2017, and became a Diplomate of American Board of Periodontology and Fellow of International College of Dentists in 2018.
Professor Dr Rahimah Abdul Kadir, Clinical Dental Prevention and registered Public Health Dental Specialist is former Dentistry Dean of University Malaya and Founding Dean of a private institution. She receives her first degree from Indonesian Universitas Padjadjaran (1976), later undertake her postgraduate training in US ivy league universities, Indiana University at Indianapolis (1978-1980) and, Michigan University School of Public Health for her Masters (1984) and Doctorate in Public Health (1992). She received the Distinguished Fellow of the International College of Dentists in 2015. Internationally, she is a Malaysia Chapter Chairman of the Global Alliance for Cavity Free Future, Senior Dental Leader of UK-based Global Child Dental Health initiative, World Federation of Public Health Associations’ Maternal Child Oral Health Work Group member. Regionally active, she has served as Executive committee member of the SEA Association of Dental Education, SEAADE (since 1995, President in 2006-2008), Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry, AAPD (since 1996, first lady President (2008-2010) and, Council Member for IADR-SEA (2017-2019). On the home front, she is an ardent advocate of caries, fluorides and fluoridation as well as tobacco control. She is Adjunct Professor and advisor since 2009 to the University Malaya Nicotine Research team, and has contributed substantially in the development of Tobacco Control and Cessation initiatives in Malaysia. Professionally, she has contributed to date as a member of the Malaysian Dental Council(since 2000), Malaysian Qualification Agency (since 2004), Founding President of the landmark Malaysian Dental Public Health Specialist Association (2009-2011) and President of IADR Malaysian Section (2017-2019).
Dr. Baekil Kim is a Chair professor of Preventive Dentistry and Public Oral Health at Yonsei University College of Dentistry, Republic of Korea. He received his dental doctorate degree, MSD, PhD from Yonsei University. He served as Vice-Dean at Yonsei University College of Dentistry from 2014 to 2022. From 2005 to the present, he has worked as the Korean representative of ISO TC106 dentistry's SC 7 oral care products division. His research goal is to develop and clinically apply various technologies for preventing oral and systemic diseases. His representative research achievement is Optical diagnostic technology for early detection of oral diseases using QLF, and he has published more than 72 related papers. He also published several dental textbooks “Textbook of Oral Care Products” as a lead author, “Preventive Dentistry”, and "Detection and assessment of dental caries: A clinical guide” as a co-author. Recent research interest is the field of controlling oral and systemic diseases through oral microbiome research. He has been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research for developing oral microbiome-based evaluation platforms and source technology.
Edward C.M. Lo is currently Chair Professor of Dental Public Health in the Faculty of Dentistry in the University of Hong Kong. He is a past President of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Southeast Asian Division and the IADR Asia-Pacific Region, and a past IADR Treasurer. Prof. Lo is the Chairman of the Specialty Board of Community Dentistry of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (CDSHK). He is also a past President of the CDSHK. His research interest is in oral epidemiology, oral healthcare services and preventive dentistry. He has published over 350 papers in international scientific journals and a few book chapters. Prof. Lo has conducted many oral epidemiological surveys on various population groups, as well as laboratory and clinical studies on new preventive and treatment methods for dental caries. Prof. Lo has published extensively on clinical trials using various topical fluoride agents in the prevention of dental caries, and the use of various agents to arrest active decay in the primary teeth of young children and root surface of permanent teeth in older adults. With his outstanding contributions to the field, Prof. Lo was awarded the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research in 2016 and also the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award (for research in oral health promotion for children) in 2021.
Dr. Kenneth Luk obtained his BDS at the University of Liverpool in 1987. He spent the early years of practice in the UK. Dr. Luk has been in private practice since returning to Hong Kong in 1995 and currently serves as part-time Clinical Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Luk has incorporated lasers in Dentistry since 2002. Furthering the passion in lasers, he obtained the MSc in Lasers in Dentistry at Aachen University, Germany in 2013. In 2021, Dr. Luk achieved PhD in laser research at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Luk is currently the secretary of the Asia Pacific Division of WFLD (World Federation for Laser Dentistry). He is active in research and publications in laser dentistry. Dr. Luk is the editorial board member of the journal, “Lasers in Dental Science”. He is involved in laser education with WFLD (World Federation for Laser Dentistry), ALD (Academy of Laser Dentistry) and AALZ (Aachen Dental Laser Centre).
Jukka Matinlinna is Honorary Professor of Dental Materials Science at the University of Hong Kong, the faculty of dentistry. In addition, he is Professor of Applied Dental Sciences at the University of Manchester, at the division of dentistry. His experience in preclinical dental education and dental materials research started in 2002 in Turku, at the University of Turku, Finland. Over the years, he has spent several periods as a research scientist at NIOM (Nordic Institute of Dental Materials) in Oslo, Norway and at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Jukka’s current interests include massive open access online courses, e-learning platforms, artificial intelligence in dentistry, dental implants, and complex adhesive systems in clinical dentistry. Rumour has it, he is currently actively learning basics in microbiology and its applications in endodontics and periodontology, because he strongly believes in life-long dental learning and education. Jukka is a well-known invited lecturer throughout the years in particular in South-East Asia, because Hong Kong was his home town for 12 years. His popular ‘Biomaterials I-II’ course has been lectured and distributed in Hong Kong, Finland, and Myanmar. Jukka’s academic records include two fellow-memberships in dental bodies, honorary positions, e.g., Saveetha Dental College, University of Turku, and University of Helsinki. Jukka has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers, organized dental symposia, delivered 125 invited lectures and possesses an h-index of 50, with 11,000 citations. Jukka is an active reviewer for manuscripts for a number of leading dental journals. During his Hong Kong years, he assumed many leaderships roles.
Dr. Shigeyuki Nagai (Japan) received his DDS from the Osaka Dental University, Japan in 1987 and studied at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine as a Clinical Fellow from1989-1992. He practiced at the Massachusetts Veterans Administration Medical Center and General Hospital in 1991. He received his PhD from Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Dr. Nagai serves as a Board member of the Japanese Society for Laser Dentistry, Asia and Pacific Division of the WFLD (International Society for Lasers in Dentistry), the Japan Society for Dental Anti-Aging and Vice President of the Japanese Academy of Color for Dentistry. He is a committee member of the Japan Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, Japan Society for Laser Surgery and Medicine and Japan Association of Microscopic Dentistry; President and Chief Instructor for the Japanese Chapter of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He was awarded the Leon Goldman Award for Clinical Excellence in Laser Dentistry from the Academy of Laser Dentistry in 2010 and the Excellent Presentation Prize of the Japanese Academy of Color for Dentistry in 2008. Dr. Nagai maintains a full-time private dental practice in Tokyo, Japan and visiting lecturer at Tokyo Medical and Dental University Photoperiodontics, Department of Periodontology.
Dr. Hiroshi Ogawa acquired his dentist qualifications at the Nihon University in Japan in 1994, his Masters in Public Health Dentistry at the University of Sydney in Australia and his PhD in Preventive Dentistry at Niigata University in Japan. He has been Head and Professor at the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Niigata University. Dr. Ogawa has been working with WHO since 2003 in different capacities. Between 2014 and 2017, Dr. Ogawa has served as responsible dental officer to work with the WHO Oral Health Programme in Geneva Headquarter. Currently, He is a director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Translation of Oral Health Sciences at Niigata University, and also a member of WHO Clinical Consortium on Healthy Ageing. Dr. Ogawa has well known to contribute oral health promotion in a global perspective and has assisting oral health capacity development in several countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia and Palau etc. Since 2018, He has serving FDI as a member of the Public Health Committee. Dr. Ogawa also works for clinical research to explore the integration of oral diseases and general diseases (NCDs) that supports for implementation of the common risk factor approach.
Dr. Pitiphat is Dean and Associate Professor of Khon Kaen University Faculty of Dentistry in Thailand. She received DDS from Chulalongkorn University, MPHM from Mahidol University, MS and SD in Epidemiology from Harvard University, and is a Diplomate of the Thai Board of Dental Public Health. Dr. Pitiphat is Past President of the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry and the Thai Society of Public Health Dentistry. She is currently Honorary Secretary of the South East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE), Board of Directors of DeRouen Center for Global Oral Health at the University of Washington, USA, and Distinguished Adjunct Faculty of Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, India. Dr. Pitiphat has over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has served in numerous editorial boards, including Journal of Dental Research (JDR), JDR–Clinical & Translational Research and Oral Diseases. She has won several grants from both local and international agencies including the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). She currently serves as the Director of the NIH-funded program, “Clinical and Public Health Research Training in Oral Health for Southeast Asia”, to provide clinical research training to faculty from dental schools across the region.
Dr. André Ritter is Dean and Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the Washington University School of Dentistry. He is also an Honorary Professor in Restorative Dental Sciences of the University of Hong Kong. He received his dental doctorate degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil (UFSC), a MSD degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and a PhD from Positivo University. Dr. Ritter also has two Certificates in Operative Dentistry (UFSC and UNC), and an MBA in HealthCare Management from Northeastern University. Among other former roles, he has been a Graduate Program Director (UNC), Department Chair (UNC and NYU), and Executive Vice Dean (UNC). Dr. Ritter has been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research, particularly in the areas of biomaterials and caries risk assessment and caries management. He has also maintained a part-time intramural practice devoted to restorative and esthetic dentistry (2000-2022). Dr. Ritter has published numerous journal articles, research abstracts, and book chapters. He is a senior editor of the bestselling dental textbook “The Sturdevant’s Art and Science of Operative Dentistry” and is co-author of “Composite Veneers: The Direct-Indirect Technique” with Dr. Newton Fahl Jr. Dr. Ritter is a member of several dental organizations, including the American and International Associations for Dental Research, the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the European Caries Organization, and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Ritter has presented many scientific papers and continuing education courses regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Associate Professor Wong Mun Loke is presently Vice Dean (Academic Affairs) where he oversees the planning, management and operationalisation of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme. He plays an instrumental role in undergraduate admissions; curriculum planning, review and quality assurance as well as the development and management of policies related to teaching, learning and assessments. Mun Loke has been involved in dental education for close to two decades – initially as a part-time lecturer before joining the Faculty as a full-time staff. With his interest in education, he is involved in various aspects of higher education. He is presently a Fellow with the NUS Teaching Academy which aims to inspire and encourage excellence in teaching through professional development and regular engagements with fellow educator peers to exchange ideas and best practices in education. Regionally, Mun Loke is a Council Member of the South East Asia Dental Education Association (SEAADE). After graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from NUS in 1998, Mun Loke pursued post-graduate training in Dental Public Health at Eastman Dental Institute, University College London where he graduated in 2001 with a Masters (with Distinction) in Dental Public Health. He also completed the Diploma in Dental Public Health, Royal College of Surgeons (England) in 2001. In 2011, he completed a Masters in Business Administration from NUS. With his background in Dental Public Health, Mun Loke is actively engaged in the delivery of the undergraduate DPH curriculum. He also anchors the teaching of Behavioural Science in the BDS programme. His research interests span oral health promotion, preventive dentistry as well as public health issues related to enhancing the oral health of the geriatric population. Prior to his present role in NUS, Mun Loke spent more than 10 years in the Health Promotion Board where he worked in the School Dental Service, youth health promotion as well as community health promotion.
A/Prof. Ollie Yu is a clinical assistant professor in Cariology at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong. A/Prof. Ollie Yu finished her PhD training in the field of Cariology from the University of Hong Kong in 2019. She got her BDS and MDS from School of Stomatology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. A/Prof. Ollie Yu has published 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She received several international awards on cariology research and dental education. Her research direction and interest focus on Cariology, including caries microbiology, caries detection, minimal intervention dentistry, caries prevention, caries control and dental materials related to caries management.
Dr. Andrea Ferreira Zandona is Professor and Chair of the Comprehensive Care Department at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Zandoná is originally from Curitiba, Brazil where she received her dental degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná. She earned her master's degree in Dental Sciences in Operative Dentistry and a PhD in Dental Sciences from Indiana University. She has published and lectured nationally and internationally on prevention and management of dental caries serving on editorial boards and as reviewer for numerous scientific and dental journals. Dr. Zandona has been part of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System Foundation Committee. She has served on the European Organization of Caries Research advisory board, President of the CAMBRA coalition and the American Dental Educators Cariology Section. She is a member of the American Association of Dental Research, the International Association of Dental Research, the American Dental Education Association, the Academy of Operative Dentistry and the American Academy of Cariology. She is a Counselor for the ADEA Leadership Institute Alumni Association and a Consultant, for the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs (CSA). She serves as consultant for Colgate-Palmolive, CareQuest, Calcivis and GreenMark.
Professor and Chairman, Department of Preventive Dentistry, Peking University School of Stomatology. He graduated from the Peking University School of Stomatology with DMD degree (1992) and Ph.D. degree (1996). In 2003 he passed the examination of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and became the first scientist from the mainland of China elected as the M Paed Dent RCS (Edin., UK). He is the co-director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center (WHOCC) for the Research and Training in Preventive Dentistry in China. He is also the Chairman of the Stomatological Society of Chinese Association for Improving Birth Outcome and Child Development as well as the Vice-chairman of the Chinese Society of Preventive Dentistry,Chinese Stomatological Association. His research focuses are: (1) Oral biomarker study in the diagnosis and monitor for oral and systemic diseases. (2) The study of the epidemiology, workforce and policy for dental public health in China. (3) Molecular biological study for the dental developmental abnormality. He received more than 19 national research grants in China and published more than 90 papers as the first author or corresponding author in journals such as Protein & Cell, Journal of Dental Research and so on.
